If you were starting a new forum (lets say a new idea) would you go with a free software solution with the intention of converting to a paid product if / when your site grew, or would you start with paid software ?

I would opt for the paid product.
Invest a bit of money in a project and you're more likely to work harder to make it succeed. Besides, who wants to endure the shortcomings of the free packages and converting at a later date.

I would go with paid, probably IPB. I find they are the best forum developers, great support and are always bringing out new stuff for the board
